Introduced the idea of the graphic novel in the late 1920s and early 1930s, which would explode in the 20th and 21st centuries. Provenance: Hatay Stratton Fine Art, Northampton, Massachusetts. About the Artist: Born in Philadelphia, James Reid completed a four-year course at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, where he studied illustration under Thornton Oakley, a disciple of the Brandywine School made famous by N. In 1930, Reid created seventy-eight stunning wood engravings for The Life of Christ in woodcuts, where he depicted the most important events in the life of Christ using a series of highly-stylized woodcut prints in the Art Deco Style.

This event was important as it introduced the idea of the graphic novel in the early 20th century.
